The Intimate Register

The Three Currencies of Care

You look after people by spending hours in their company, by quietly lifting something off their load, or by saying the thing out loud while it is still true. An inquiry into the currency you trade in, and the one you cannot feel.

Hours

You show care by being present. A favor completed in another room does not land the same way. The visit is the point, even when nothing gets repaired.

People who care by doing will feel unthanked by you. You received a mended hinge; they believe they showed up. Say which currency you can actually feel.

The task

You show care by taking something off their load. Words with no corresponding change in the day can sound thin to you. You would rather be useful than eloquent.

The miss is the person who needed the sentence. A solved problem is not always the care that was being asked for.

The words

You show care by saying it, clearly, while it is still true. Unspoken loyalty registers as absence. You will believe one plain sentence over a silent year of chores.

Say it—and also notice the person declaring it with a full sink and no speech at all. Both are care, written in different hands.
