The Ethics of Collective Judgment

Care for whoever the decision lands on, the same rule applied without exception, or room for adults to choose for themselves. An inquiry into the principle you reach for when a group has to rule.

Who it lands on

You begin with the person the decision falls on. A fair-looking rule that crushes one group does not earn your vote. Harm is not an acceptable byproduct of tidiness.

The miss is a rule so finely tailored that nobody can state what it is. Care still needs a sentence other people can apply next time without consulting you.

The same rule for everyone

You want the rule to hold even when you happen to like the exception. Favoritism reads as rot. You will accept a harsher consistent outcome over a kinder uneven one.

The miss is a rule written for a life unlike the one standing in front of you. Sameness and justice are not synonyms. Ask who the rule was built around.

Room to choose

You want the group to establish a floor and then withdraw. Adults can choose. A decision that administers other people’s private lives will always grate on you.

The miss is a floor so low that “room” simply means the careless set the terms. Room works only once the harm has been named first.
