The Arrival of Feeling
14 Sep 2026
Some minds name the feeling, some remain inside it until it has finished speaking, and some set it down in order to act. An inquiry into which of the three you reach for before any deliberation has begun.
You name it
Naming a feeling makes it smaller and far more exact. Anger that turns out to be disappointment can be negotiated with. Anger left as a weather system simply occupies the room.
The Shadow Tax is delay. You can spend an entire meeting hunting for the precise word while the decision walks out without you.
You remain inside it
Remaining means you refuse to convert the feeling into a task before it has finished speaking. You let it sit there until you know what it is asking of you. The people who love you often want this from you, and you often want it from them.
The Shadow Tax is rumination. A feeling you will not set down can annex the whole afternoon. Dwelling with something is useful; taking up residence is a different instinct entirely.
You set it down to act
On some days the feeling is entirely real and the message still has to go out. Setting it down is a formidable discipline when the deadline is the point. It becomes a liability when the people around you never learn what the feeling was.
None of the three is the mature one. The inquiry reveals which you reach for first. The one you avoid is almost always the one a difficult week is asking for.
